Abstract

When ceramic production is examined in terms of artistic and industrial aspects, it is seen that there are many inorganic colorants. Iron compounds are also included in this group of colorants. It is used extensively in the production of artistic and industrial ceramics for the coloring of primers and glazes. The effects of the iron compounds on the structure of the ceramic furnace vary according to the firing atmosphere, the added colorant ratio and the temperature inside the furnace. In the study, hematite and limonite from iron compounds were added to ceramic casting clay and to transparent and matt ceramic glaze recipes which were obtained as a result of the experiments.Since the casting clay has a fluid structure, it is suitable for forming with plaster mold. For this reason, plaster models and molds were made for experiments and artistic works. In addition, when the amount of water in the ceramic casting clay is adjusted, it allows some free formations. Various artistic works can be done by using color differences of iron compounds. It provides decorative techniques such as millefiori, nerikomi and marble technique made with colored clay. When more than one iron compound doped clay is used together, one of the points that should be taken into consideration in order to avoid errors such as breaking cracking and agglomeration is that the firing shrinkage of each colored clay is similar. Water absorption and shrinkage tests were carried out on iron compound doped ceramic casting clay and its physical properties were investigated. Hematite and limonite, which were added to the prepared transparent and matte glaze prescriptions at specific and increasing rates, did not undergo deterioration and yielded positive results. It is important that all firing is done in the same degree in terms of color transitions. The colors of the test plates, which are cooked in the electric chamber oven at 11600C, are generally examined in terms of cream, mustard yellow, red coffee and brown colors; various decorative effects and textures are also have been observed.
