METAPHYSICAL INFINITY AND GOD: AN INQUIRY INTO THE NATURE OF DIVINE INFINITY

The concept of infinity has been employed in a wide variety of meanings throughout the history of philosophy. Nevertheless, discussions concerning divine infinity have often been influenced by mathematical or quantitative conceptions of infinity, and divine infinity has generally been understood in terms of the infinity or unlimitedness of the divine attributes. This article aims to examine divine infinity as directly expressive of God's mode of being, that is, on the basis of a conception of metaphysical infinity. To this end, the fundamental differences between mathematical infinity and metaphysical infinity will first be identified, after which the implications of applying metaphysical infinity to God will be explored. Within this framework, it will be argued that divine infinity cannot be reduced to the notion of the unlimitedness of divine attributes; rather, it should be understood as a fundamental principle expressing God's mode of being.
